Frequently asked questions

The questions we hear most often from people deciding between dating apps.

Do I need to pay for a dating app to get matches?

No. All three apps work on the free tier, and most people who end up in relationships never paid. Premium tiers mainly buy speed: more likes per day, seeing who liked you and better placement. Pay for one month when you have a polished profile and the time to actually go on dates, not as a substitute for either.

What is the difference between Bumble, Hinge and Tinder in one sentence each?

Bumble: women send the first message and the pace is calmer. Hinge: prompt-based profiles and an algorithm tuned for compatibility, fewer but better matches. Tinder: the largest pool, fastest swiping and the most casual intent.

How do the matching algorithms actually work?

Tinder ranks profiles by engagement and recency, so active users see more active users. Bumble weights activity and stated preferences. Hinge uses a variant of the Gale–Shapley stable-matching algorithm to surface a daily “Most Compatible” pick based on who you like and who likes people like you. None of them use the old public “desirability score” anymore.

How do we measure “success rate”?

It is an editorial survey metric: the share of mutual matches that led to at least one in-person date, as reported by respondents in our 2026 reader survey. It is not a published figure from the apps and it varies a lot by city, age and profile quality. Treat it as a directional signal, not a guarantee.

Which app is safest?

All three offer photo verification, in-app video calls and block-and-report tools. Bumble was first with mandatory photo verification and still has the most visible safety features. On any app: verify before meeting, meet in public, tell a friend where you are and never move money for someone you have not met.
